Cabernet with an attitude. 2017 Freakshow

    Cabernet with an attitude?

    Yes.  A quirky attitude.

That’s what they do at the Michael David Winery in Lodi, California.

    They do quirky.

The Michael David mantra: “we don’t break the rules, we make the rules.”

Too much of the wine world remains stuffy and pretentious.

     Then there’s Michael David.

Check out the landing page on their website.

These people are clearly having a good time.

But you’re more concerned with the wine…not the way it’s marketed.

     And so are we.

Basic RGB

It’s Wine Thursday!, our weekly good-wine-at-a-good-price-

that-you-can-find recommendation.

This week, the 2017 Freakshow is the featured attraction.

I fully expected this to be a big, fat jammy fruit bomb.

     It wasn’t.

Instead, the body is medium and it has less tannin than your

typical cabernet sauvignon.

There are undertones of vanilla and fruit but the dominant flavors

are spice and pepper.

It’s difficult to find an easy-drinking California cabernet for less than 20

bucks.  Believe me, we’re constantly searching.   But this one works.

Here’s a tasting tip for Freakshow:  pop the cork at least 30 minutes before

pouring.  This tasted OK right out of the bottle…much better 1/2 hour later…

and even better after an hour plus of air.

The 2017 Freakshow should be easy for you to find.

It’s at Costco for $16.39.  Fred Meyer has it for $18.99.

Whole Foods and Safeway sells it for $19.99.

You can go online and order it from Wine.com for $16.99.

Or the Michael David Winery has it for $20 even.
