22 Oct You have Halloween candy and you have wine. Pair them!
While digging through Halloween candy-wine pairing articles, we found
this irresistible quote from Cosmopolitan’s website:
“The best thing about being an adult is that you can eat candy and drink wine
whenever you damn well please and nobody can say anything about it.”
Bam!
Nothing we can…or need to…add to that. So let’s get to the pairings.
Mike and Ike and Riesling
Sweet-sour candy works well alongside a citrusy, acidic riesling.
Substitutes: Sour Patch Kids for the candy and Gewürztraminier for the wine.
Kit Kat and Pinot Noir
Here you have a lighter-bodied wine complimenting a lighter-style confection.
The earthy Oregon-style pinots, with their tart cherry notes, work a bit better
with Kit Kat’s milk chocolate-wafer combo than the bigger, bolder California pinots.
BTW, did you know this is the 85th anniversary of Kit Kat?
I don’t think it looks a day over 50.
Candy corn and Prosecco
Ah, the much-maligned candy corn.
Many loathe it but for those of you who love it,
combine a handful with a flute of the sweet Italian sparkler.
Another Prosecco pairing that sounds crazy but works: Prosecco with lollipops.
Hershey’s milk chocolate and Cabernet Sauvignon
These are both pretty darn good on their own.
But combining the dark fruit flavor of cab with the milky goodness
of the Hershey’s takes both to a new level.
One caveat: don’t pop open your expensive, trophy cabernet for this.
It’s probably too big and too rich. The Hershey’s wouldn’t stand a chance.
A sub-$30 cabernet will work just fine here.
Dark chocolate and Late Bottled Vintage Port
If you’re feeling particularly decadent, you’ll love this tried-and-true classic.
The bittersweet dark chocolate goes oh-so-well with the sweet, nutty flavor of the LBV port.
By the way, though Late Bottled Vintage Port might sound rare and exotic, it’s not.
You can find it at most well-stocked grocery stores.
Grab some LBV port, dark chocolate and sip the night away.
Happy Halloween everyone!
