31 Mar California GSM – 2020 Hahn
GSM.
The initials stand for a type of red wine blend that combines
three complimentary grapes, Grenache, Syrah and Môurvedre.
Winemakers in southern France are rightfully regarded
as the masters of GSM.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is generally acknowledged
as the pinnacle of the GSM blend.
But producers in the warmer climates of eastern Washington,
southern Australia and central California are also producing
some standout GSM’s.
It’s Wine Thursday!, our weekly review
of a good wine that’s easy to find
and reasonably priced.
This week, we’re checking out an affordable GSM
produced in one of California’s unsung wine-producing areas.
Where it’s from…
Some 40 years ago, the Hahn family
established a wine-making operation near Soledad
in the middle of California’s Salinas Valley.
The area, known as the Santa Lucia Highlands,
has one of the longest growing seasons in the entire state,
ideal conditions for the three red grapes
that comprise Hahn’s GSM.
What it is…
The breakdown for Hahn’s GSM is 65% Grenache,
33% Syrah and just a touch…2%…of Mourvèdre.
Grenache, typically bright and fruity, shows its stuff
in this blend. There are dark cherry, plum and raspberry
flavors leading the way. The Syrah contributes body and structure.
It’s a dry, easy-drinking red with a hint of spice on the finish.
The Hahn is reminiscent of a Côtes du Rhône,
the hearty entry-level red blend from southern France.
And that’s a high compliment for any GSM.
