05 Aug Another Coppola value – 2019 Mammarella Pinot Grigio
Francis Ford Coppola has been at it for a long time…
both directing films and making wine.
He first filed for a wine making license
way back in 1979, the same year he released
his Vietnam War epic, Apocalypse Now.
Over the past five decades, he has built
an impressive array of high-value bang-for-the-buck
wine brands, many of which occupy the shelves
at your local supermarket.
Perhaps you’ve purchased a bottle of Director’s Cut,
Diamond Collection, Coppola or a can of Sofia.
For Wine Thursday!, our weekly review of a good-wine-
at-a-good-price-that-you-can-find, we’re checking out
a Pinot Grigio from yet another value brand
in the Coppola portfolio.
Coppola’s Mammarella brand is an homage
to the matriarch of the family, Italia,
Coppola’s mother.
When you first taste Mammarella Pinot Grigio,
you might find yourself wondering,
“what’s going on here?”
You’ll get tropical and citrus fruit flavors such as
grapefruit and pineapple which don’t normally
show up in Pinot Grigio.
The reason: this wine is 18% Chardonnay and
5% Sauvignon Blanc giving it a bit of a white blend feel.
That’s not to its detriment.
This Pinot Grigio is off-dry, zesty and vibrant.
It would be a good match with seafood, chicken
or pasta with light sauce.
It’s also quite refreshing by itself.
We found the 2019 Coppola Mammarella Pinot Grigio
at QFC for $12.88 and Fred Meyer for $12.99.
Two other stores, Mariano’s and Gerbes, list it at $14.99.
It’s at Ralph’s for $15.70.
You can order it from the Coppola site for $19
