25 Feb Cab on the sweet side – Oberon 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon
The words sweet and Cabernet Sauvignon don’t normally occupy space
in the same sentence.
The taste descriptors for Cabernet are usually dark fruit,
green pepper and vanilla.
And normally, Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied, highly concentrated
and age worthy.
It’s Wine Thursday!, our weekly good-wine-at-a-good-price-
that-you-can-find review, just in time for your weekend.
This week, we’re checking out Oberon, a Cabernet Sauvignon
that breaks most of the Cabernet Sauvignon rules.
First off, about that name…
Actually, according to medieval literature, Oberon, depicted above,
is the king of the fairies.
Oberon is also the name of one of the five moons of Uranus.
As far as can be determined, any similarities between fairies,
Uranus and wine are strictly coincidental.
As mentioned, Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon breaks the rules.
Right out of the bottle, this wine had a harsh edge.
I let it air out for two hours before giving it a second try.
Glad I did and I suggest you do the same.
The contact with air helped it round into form.
It still isn’t big and dry and hearty like your typical Cabernet.
It’s medium-bodied and slightly sweet.
Most Cabs are age worthy. But there’s no reason to cellar this one.
It’s highly unlikely this will taste any better next year
or the year after or the year after that.
Having said all of that, though it might not be traditional,
it is enticing.
While it’s easy to drink on its own
I would imagine it would be a great match with a steak.
