Warm your winter – Angels & Cowboys 2019 Proprietary Red

What a weird winter this has been.

Snow on the Hollywood sign in LA?

And in the vineyards in Napa Valley?

Really?

Yes, really.

Spring debuts later this month.

Hopefully it will bring with it

moderate, normal temperatures.

In the meantime, cold weather maintains its grip

on many parts of the country, prompting

wine drinkers to maintain their grip on a

winter-appropriate option…the California red blend.

It’s Wine Thursday!

Every week we spotlight a good wine

that sells at a reasonable price and is easy for you to find,

either at retail, online or both.

This week, we’re checking out a relative newcomer

to the California red blend scene.

Where it’s from

It’s been less than ten years since Angels & Cowboys

debuted in Sonoma County.

Based in Healdsburg, California, Angels & Cowboys sources grapes

from growers in Carneros, Russian River Valley and Dry Creek Valley.

The winery has gained a following for its sparkling wine, rosé

and this week’s featured red blend.

What it is

Is the term “proprietary red” significant?

Not really.  We don’t know exactly what it means.

Proprietary red does not have a legal definition in the U.S. wine trade.

This much we do know.

The 2019 Angels & Cowboys red is Zinfandel based

with Syrah, Petit Sirah, Carignan and Grenache also in the blend.

It’s dark, robust and aromatic, packing a peppery punch.

Notes of coffee, pepper and chocolate linger.

The finish is long and smooth.

It’s a strong and persistent red but the flavors, acidity and tannins

are well balanced…a winter warmer for sure.
