15 Jul We go low – Dark Horse 2019 Pinot Grigio
As we scan the shelves looking for wines to evaluate,
we focus on the $10 to $30 price range.
Why? Because that is your price range.
According to Vivino, the “world’s largest online
wine marketplace”, an average bottle of what Vinvino
designates as “good” red wine costs $15.66
while an average bottle of “good” white
goes for $14.41.
It’s Wine Thursday!, our weekly good-wine-at-a-good-price-
that-you-can-find recommendation, just in time for the weekend.
This week, our curiosity got the better of us.
Can a wine that sells for less than ten bucks be worth the bother?
As it turns out, the answer…surprisingly….is
yes.
Dark Horse Pinot Grigio is the exception to the rule…
a true QPR (quality-price ratio) marvel.
Medium-bodied and ever-so-slightly sweet,
this Pinot Grigio comes at you with refreshing fruit flavors
such as apple and peach. Beneath the surface, you’ll
pick up a hint of lemon.
Make no mistake. This is not a complex wine.
But it is a solid option for casual drinking
and an undeniable bargain.
As a bulk buy for entertaining, it’s a no brainer.
Serve this one well chilled. Ten minutes in the freezer…
that’s right, the freezer…will only make it better.
Note: we sampled the 2019 vintage.
The 2020 vintage, which we did not try,
is also showing up at retail and online.
We doubt there’s a significant difference in taste
between the two vintages.
