23 Feb Zin from one of the old pros – Wild Thing 2019 Zinfandel
In a business where winemakers come and go…
quickly and often…
the old pros stand out.
Carol Shelton is an old pro.
She’s been making wine for over 40 successful years.
Shelton is widely cited as the most awarded winemaker
in the United States.
Early in her career she made the decision to focus
on a single varietal.
That varietal…zinfandel.
It’s Wine Thursday!
Every Thursday, we feature a good wine
that sells at a reasonable price
and is easy to find at retail and online.
This week, we’re shining the light
on a classic, affordable big bad red.
That’s “bad” in a good way.
Where it’s from
While the Carol Shelton winery is based in Santa Rosa, California,
the grapes that go into Wild Thing come from the Cox vineyards
in Medocino County, some 150 miles north of San Francisco.
What it is
As the name would indicate, Wild Thing is not shy or demure.
Full-bodied, bold and concentrated, it’s brimming with dark fruit flavors
such as cherry and plum.
While slightly sweet, this is no fruit bomb.
It’s smooth and structured with pleasing tannins.
Carol Shelton says, “You are what you drink”.
Totally agree…and this zin drinks well.
