Low-calorie white – 2020 Liquid Light Sauvignon Blanc

“Low calorie” has never been a hotter topic

in the food & beverage realm.

It’s part of an all-embracing trend.

Consumers are prioritizing health and wellness.

Consumer goods companies have responded,

producing an increased number of

low-sugar, low-carb and low-calorie products

that now occupy virtually every section of the grocery store.

That includes the wine section.

As consumers are trying to live (and drink) healthier,

“light” wines have proliferated.

It’s Wine Thursday!, our weekly review of an easy-to-find wine

that sells at a reasonable price.

This week, we’re looking directly into the light…

the Liquid Light.

Where it’s from

Liquid Light is produced in the state of Washington.

It’s made by the Elicit Wine Project, the innovation hub of the

Michelle Wine Estates, known for the ultra-popular

Chateau Ste. Michelle and Columbia Crest brands.

What it is

First, let’s do a little math.

A regular 5-ounce glass of Sauvignon Blanc has around 125 calories.

A 5-ounce glass of Liquid Light SB has 95 calories.

By fermenting out most of the residual sugar

in the wine-making process, Liquid Light “saves” 30 calories…

a reduction of nearly 25%.

This wine is well-named.

Liquid Light is just that… light and slightly effervescent.

In true Sauvignon Blanc fashion, grapefruit, lemon and tropical fruit

are in the forefront.  It’s moderately acidic which is typical

of Washington’s cool climate wine.

Here comes the caveat:  compared to conventional Sauvignon Blanc,

there is a definite difference in flavor, texture and body.

All are muted…not watered down as in a light beer…but not prominent.

This is simply not as crisp, tangy or herbal as a conventional Sauvignon Blanc.

Would I recommend it?

I recommend giving it a test run.

Many have.  This wine sells well.

Ultimately, the trade off…saving calories but sacrificing flavor…

will be an individual decision.

If you do give it a trial, serve it very well chilled.
