It’s National Drink Wine Day – Ponzi 2021 Pinot Gris

So much to celebrate…

Not only is Oregon Wine Month continuing,

today, May 25th, is National Wine Day.

No one knows…and I’m not sure anyone truly cares…

about who made the official declaration

that this is National Wine Day.

But it started 14 years ago and continues as an excuse,

as if one were needed, to have a glass of red, white or sparkling.

BTW, today is also National Tap Dance Day.

It might be prudent to celebrate…and participate in…

one of these “National” days before the other.

Yet another reason to celebrate…

it’s Wine Thursday!, our weekly look

at a good wine that sells at a reasonable price

and is easy to find at retail and online.

In honor of Oregon Wine Month,

we’re checking out one of the varietals

and one of the families that helped put

Oregon wine on the map.

Dick-and-Nancy-Ponzi

Where it’s from

In the late 60’s and early 70’s, several adventurous pioneers made their way

to the northern Willamette Valley to become wine makers.

Included in that group were Dick and Nancy Ponzi

who were among the first to grow Pinot Gris in the region.

For the Ponzis, the Pinot Gris experiment was a success.

Over 50 years later, it remains a reliable constant

in the Ponzi Vineyards’ lineup.

What it is

Ripe apple, pear and peach flavors lead the way

with a touch of honey in the background

of this fruit-forward white.

It’s slightly crisp, rich on the palate and has

medium-to-high acidity.

This would be a great match with Asian dishes…

anything spicy for that matter…and also

would work well with classic roast chicken.

With warmer weather on the way,

you might be in the market for a

bang-for-the-buck summer cooler.

Ponzi’s Pinot Gris would be a good option.
